Tippet Rise co-presented the world premiere of Seven Pillars, a bold, genre-defying film featuring works for percussion quartet written by the celebrated composer Andy Akiho and performed by Sandbox Percussion on October 21st, 2021.The project encompasses dance, animation, time-lapse, experimental narrative film and, of course, music performed with traditional percussive instruments and found objects.
About the Artists
Described as “trailblazing” (The Los Angeles Times), Andy Akiho is a composer and performer of new music. The New York Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony, Music@Menlo, Chamber Music Northwest, Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect, the LA Dance Project, and many other ensembles and orchestras have commissioned premiers from Akiho. He is an active steel pannist who performs his compositions with various ensembles worldwide and has been recognized with many prestigious awards, from the Rome Prize to the Harvard University Fromm Commission.
Brought together by their love of chamber music and the joy of playing together, Sandbox Percussion has been described as “exhilarating” by The New York Times and “virtuosic and utterly mesmerizing” by The Guardian. A leading proponent of contemporary percussion chamber music, the ensemble has led masterclasses and coachings at the Peabody Conservatory, Curtis Institute, Cornell University, and many other institutions and maintains a busy concert schedule, captivating audiences across North America and the UK. Members of Sandbox Percussion are Jonathan Allen, Victor Caccese, Ian Rosenbaum, and Terry Sweeney.
