Alik Sudbin performs Haydn’s Divertimento in C major Hob.XIV:3
February 18, 2022
Our friend, the great Russian virtuoso and pianist Yevgeny Sudbin, has two very talented children. His son, Alik, recently made his debut performance with the Camerata Tchaikovsky in London featuring Haydn’s gorgeous short (and very diverting) Divertimento in C, probably written in 1765 while Haydn was living in Nikolaus Esterházy’s palace in the small baroque town of Eisenstadt on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl in Austria.
Both Mozart and Haydn worked their whole lives to achieve the simplicity and purity epitomized by the C Major Divertimento. Haydn was then 33 and Mozart 9. We invite you to enjoy this delightful performance, by eight-year-old Alik, on our Films page.
The festive Christmas decorations of St. Mark’s Church echo the sense of epiphany, discovery, and childhood embedded in the music. As we celebrate winter in Montana, it’s nice to be reminded that the same spirit is being evoked in London, straight from Austria, 257 years ago.
