We are delighted for families to join us for performance by The Westerlies.
Designed to educate and engage, the free Family Concerts at Tippet Rise explore instruments, composers, history, and themes in an interactive performance.
Each family concert performance is preceded by an “instrument petting zoo,” in which children are encouraged to make sounds with instruments and enjoy making the magic of music.

The Westerlies holds a singular space in modern music. From Carnegie Hall to Coachella, the Grammy-nominated quartet has upended presumptions of the brass tradition to create music that NPR Music calls “folk-like and composerly, lovely and intellectually rigorous.”
Composed of Riley Mulherkar and Chloe Rowlands on trumpet and Andy Clausen and Addison Maye-Saxon on trombone, the ensemble has relentlessly composed, arranged, adapted, recorded, and toured over the past 15 years with the precision of a string quartet, the audacity of a rock band, and the charm of a family sing-along. Across 10 critically acclaimed albums, they have championed countless living composers and collaborators, including Caroline Shaw, Nico Muhly, Conrad Tao, Wayne Horvitz, and Robin Holcomb.
2025 saw the release of two major recordings: Paradise, The Westerlies’ Grammy-nominated re-imagining of the shape note choral tradition, and Songbook, Vol. 3, a live EP and concert film celebrating friends and recent collaborators such as Adrianne Lenker, Aoife O’Donovan, and Joanna Newsom.
In 2026 The Westerlies embark on a major retrospective of American music pioneer Bill Frisell, featuring newly composed works and arrangements; an adaptation of Maria Schneider’s song cycle Winter Morning Walks showcasing South African vocalist Vuyo Sotashe; and a new collaboration with Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold, which explores the music of Judee Sill.
