Peter and Cathy Halstead
Co-Founders
Cathy and Peter Halstead have known each other since they were 16. They both grew up in families that for generations have sought to bring art and education to communities both in the United States and abroad. They were later classmates at both Columbia and NYU.
Cathy is an abstract painter, whose work explores the similarities between the infinitesimal and the infinite, between the repetition of invisible but essential patterns in nature. Examples of her work are available online at cathyhalstead.com.
Peter is a pianist, photographer, novelist, and poet. He has published 17 volumes of poems as well as the novel Bug the Great. In recent years he has published A Winter Ride, which combines prose, photos, and poetry to create a sense of the anticipation of winter in Montana. The two-volume series, Tippet Rise Beginnings, describes the personal journey that brought Cathy and Peter Halstead to realize their dream of creating Tippet Rise. Several of Peter’s piano recordings are available in the Tippet Rise Music Download Library, including Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, The Tempest, and his six-album piano series, The Himalaya Sessions.
In addition to Tippet Rise, Cathy and Peter are founders of the Adrian Brinkerhoff Poetry Foundation, which gathers poems from across places, eras, and traditions for audiences worldwide. The website also features films of poets reciting their works, presented in partnership with Poetry Ireland, WritersMosaic, and The Academy of American Poets.
Cathy and Peter founded the Digital Lab in the Rockefeller Library at Brown University, where Cathy is a trustee emeritus. Cathy is on the board of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and of Storm King Art Center.
Cathy and Peter are trustees of the Sidney E. Frank Foundation, which makes grants in climate, education, and the arts. Grantees include The Colburn School, Chamber Music Society, the Aspen Music Festival, Bravo! Vail, and The National Theatre and Glyndebourne Opera in the UK, among others. In Montana, the foundation supports diverse arts and education organizations, such as the Yellowstone Art Museum, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, Billings Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, and Red Lodge Music Festival.
Cathy and Peter were inspired to found Tippet Rise by Storm King Art Center, TICKON Sculpture Park in Denmark, la fondation Maeght in St.-Paul-de-Vence, Snape Maltings in England, and by Bravo! Vail and the Aspen Music Festival.
Cathy and Peter have two wonderful daughters and two adorable grandchildren.
